Louisa May Alcott ended Little Women (1868) with the words “So the curtain fell on Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Whether it rebounds or not, depends on the reception for the first act of the domestic TV series Little Women.”
It was an instant commercial and critical success, and readers demanded to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly finished the second volume, Good Wives (1869), and then Little Men (1871) and Jo’s Boys (1886). The novel follows the lives of four March sisters—Meg, Beth, Jo and Amy, each with a very different personality. It is argued that in Little Women the first image of the “all-American girl” is found and that many aspects of her are expressed in the various March sisters. But whatever the reason, generations of readers have loved these novels since they were first published.
Truly a classic, this series tells the imaginary story of four sisters growing up. It then goes on to tell about their adult lives and the children they raised. Set in the distant past, the musical notes and manners were different. And new.
I wish I had read this book when I was younger, so many great lessons. Ms. Alcott’s writing is easy to understand in today’s world and is a shining example of ethics, compassion, empathy, respect, and love of community. This should be a must-read for all high school students.
