African-American West. A moving and eye-opening book.” (Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Figures)

A rising New York Times reporter tells the compelling story of the Compton Cowboys, a group of African-American men and women who defied stereotypes and continued a proud black cowboy tradition. century in the heart of one of America’s most notorious cities.

In Compton, California, 10 black riders on horseback of unusual shape, their cowboy hats tilted in the harsh Los Angeles sun. They were Compton cowboys, their little ranch one of the last in the formerly semi-rural part of the city, which had been home to African-American horsemen for decades. century. To most people, Compton is known only as the home of the great rap artists NWA and Kendrick Lamar, who were hyped by the media for seemingly incurable gang violence. But in 1988, Mayisha Akbar founded Compton Jr. Posse to provide local youth with a street-safe alternative, one that connects them to the rich heritage of Black cowboys in American culture. From Mayisha’s youth organization came the Cowboys of today: Black men and women from Compton, whose ranch and horses provided close friendships, respite from violence force, heal wounds, and recover from incarceration.

The Cowboys include Randy, Mayisha’s grandson, faced with the daunting task of remaking the Cowboys for a new generation; Anthony, a former drug dealer and prisoner, now a family man and mentor; Keiara, a single mother pursuing her dream of winning the national rodeo championship; and a tight group of 20 men – Kenneth, Keenan, Chris, and Tre – whose horses brought freedom, protection, and status that often eluded Compton’s young black men.

The Compton Cowboys is a story of trauma and transformation, race and identity, compassion and ultimately belonging. Walter Thompson-Hernández paints a unique and unexpected portrait of this city, pushing back against stereotypes to reveal an urban community in all its complexity, tragedy and triumph.

What an inspirational story. Members of my family ride horses and perform in rodeo sets. This story motivated me to know more. The author balances the active lives of Cowboys/Cowgirls with a central theme – the love of their horses. Exquisite.

Growing up in Southern California, I have always been a lover of horses and understand what they bring to my life. I was recently introduced to CC via CBS Sunday. I didn’t know that this amazing group existed. This book is well written and I enjoyed hearing the author at the end of the story. Long live Compton cowboys. Ham play up.
