The Dead Are Arising The Life of Malcolm X – Audiobook Online By: Les Payne, Tamara Payne
An epic biography of Malcolm X is finally here, based on hundreds of hours of interviews by the author, rewriting much of the known story.
Les Payne, the renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, embarks on a nearly 30-year search to interview anyone he can find who actually knew Malcolm X – all both surviving siblings of Malcolm Little’s family, classmate, street friend. , roommates, Nation of Islam figures, FBI police and spies, and political leaders around the world. His goal was ambitious: to turn interviews spanning over a hundred hours into an unprecedented portrait of Malcolm X, one that would separate fact from fiction.
The result is this historical biography that evokes a never-before-seen world of the protagonist, a work whose title is inspired by a phrase Malcolm X used when he saw followers His Hartford stirs purposefully, as if the dead really rise, to overcome the obstacles of racism. Placing Malcolm’s life not only in the Nation of Islam but also in the broader context of American history, the book traces the life of one of the most politically relevant figures of the 20th century, from street criminals to devoted moralists and revolutionaries.
In tracing the life of Malcolm X from his birth in Nebraska in 1925 to his assassination in Harlem in 1965, Payne provides painstaking details handpicked from Malcolm’s youth during the period. Depression, describes the influence of his Garveyite parents: his father, Earl, a traveling preacher who was hit by a car on the street in Lansing, Michigan, in 1929, and his mother , Louise, who continued to pass on Black pride to her children after Earl’s death. Filling each chapter with resonating drama, Payne follows Malcolm as a petty criminal in Boston and Harlem during the 1930s and early 1940s until his religious awakening and conversion to the Nation Islam in a Massachusetts penitentiary.
With the unwavering determination of a biographer, Payne has corrected the historical record and made extraordinary revelations – from unmasking the mysterious NOI founder Fard Muhammad, the forerunner of Elijah Muhammad; to a hair-raising scene, delivered in cinematic detail, of Malcolm and Minister Jeremiah X Shabazz’s secret 1961 meeting with the KKK; to the minute-to-minute account of Malcolm X’s murder at the Audubon Ballroom.
Introduced by Payne’s daughter and lead researcher, Tamara Payne, who, after her father’s death, heroically completed the biography, The Dead Are Arising is a profound and compelling work of affirmation. Malcolm X’s central role in the African-American struggle for freedom.
This is also a real pleasure to listen to. The authors strike a great balance between. admiring and objective at the same time. One of the best biographies/history books I’ve read in a long time. It’s on par with Newsday journalist’s other great book, The Power Broker by Robert Caro.
Very interesting narrative of Malcolm’s life and political surroundings in the United States. It is eye-opening to hear M.X’s story through interviews with his friends, family members and acquaintances who have either witnessed it or played a complex role in it. It’s been a while since I read Malcolm X’s Autobiography: As Told to Alex Haley, but this book tells a much fuller story. I want to consider this book as a must-read in high school and would highly recommend it to anyone.
