The Dragons, the Giant, the Women

A Memoir

By: Wayétu Moore, Narrated by: Tovah Ott

“The Dragons, the Giant, the Women” is a memoir by Wayétu Moore that tells the story of her childhood in Liberia and her family’s escape to the United States during the country’s civil war. She recounts her experiences of growing up in a privileged household and attending an elite school until the war breaks out, forcing her family to flee. Along the way, she encounters dragons, giants, and other fantastical creatures, which serve as metaphors for the challenges she faces. The memoir explores themes of identity, loss, and the power of storytelling in overcoming trauma and adversity.

A gripping memoir about escaping the First Liberian Civil War and building a life in the United States.

When Wayétu Moore turned five years old, her father and grandmother threw a big birthday party for her at their home in Monrovia, Liberia, but all she could think of was that she missed her mother, who was working. and study in distant New York. Before she gets the reunion her father promised her, war breaks out in Liberia. The family was forced to run away from home, walking and hiding for three weeks until they reached Lai village. Eventually, a rebel soldier smuggles them across the border to Sierra Leone, reunites his family, and begins another journey, this time to the United States.

Spanning this harrowing journey through Moore’s childhood, her years adjusting to life in Texas as a black woman and an immigrant, and her eventual return to Liberia, The Dragons, the Giant, the Women is a deeply moving story of a journey to find home in the midst of upheaval. Moore has a novelist’s eye for suspense and emotional depth, and this unforgettable memoir is filled with imaginative flights, lyricism, and fine prose. In capturing both the vague magic and the harsh reality of what is becoming an increasingly common experience, Moore sheds light on the enormous personal and political forces that continue to influence many migrants around the world, calling on all of us to acknowledge the tenacious power of love and family.

This memoir is very well written. The author magically transports you back to your childhood through her storytelling. I also loved her first novel, She Will Be King, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Her memoirs are told so vividly that you want to read more about her.
