The Far Side of the World is the tenth book in Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series. It tells the story of Captain Jack Aubrey and his friend and ship’s surgeon, Stephen Maturin, on their journey aboard HMS Surprise during the Napoleonic Wars.
The book begins with Surprise being assigned to intercept a French privateer, the Acheron, which is causing havoc in the Pacific. Aubrey successfully outmaneuvers the enemy ship and damages it, but Acheron manages to escape.
Surprise then sets course for the Galapagos Islands to carry out repairs. While there, Maturin explores the islands and makes important scientific discoveries. The crew also restock their supplies and continue their pursuit of the Acheron.

Aubrey and his men finally catch up with the Acheron in the waters off the coast of Chile. In a dramatic battle, Surprise sustains serious damage but eventually emerges victorious. Aubrey takes command of the Acheron and burns it to prevent it from falling into French hands.
The book ends with Aubrey and Maturin sailing back to England on a new ship, the Diane, having achieved their mission and overcome their personal challenges along the way.

The South Sea is a haven for battle-weary Captain Jack Aubrey and the ship’s surgeon Stephen Maturin.

But their peace is disturbed when Stephen falls in love with a strange sea creature that causes him to fall into the sea. Acting in his usual stubborn style, Jack rushes to the rescue, unfortunately not planning what will happen as the two are underwater watching Surprise’s sails disappear into the mist.

This book has the best ending of the previous books in the series as far as I know. Having said that, the entire series is filled with great moments, intriguing plots and themes. I’m still connecting the dots with Homer.

I reviewed each of these recordings in the order in which I listened to them. So far they just got better! Patrick Tull’s American accent is very classic and only helps deepen the immersion in this incredible series. Far Side of the World is another perfect installment in the greatest historical series ever written. Listen to it and don’t hesitate.
