The Five – Audiobook Online By: Hallie Rubenhold

Five devastating human stories and a dark and moving portrait of Victorian London – the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper.

Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, even though they have never met. They come from Fleet Street, Knightsbridge, Wolverhampton, Sweden and Wales. They write ballads, run coffee shops, live on country estates; they inhale the ink dust from the printer and escape the traffickers.

What they have in common is the year of the murder: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the figure created by the press to fill that void has become more famous than anyone else. of these five women.

For more than a century, the newspapers have been eager to tell us that the “Butcher” hunts prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it also prevents the true stories of these fascinating women from being told. Now, in this devastating tale of five lives, Rubenhold has finally set the record, revealing a world not only of Dickens and Queen Victoria, but of poverty, homelessness and overflowing hate lan. They die of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time – but their greatest misfortune is being born a woman.

The author breathes life into each woman by telling her personal story in relation to the social structures of the times in which she lives. The author concludes by linking the past with the present, illustrating common erroneous lenses with which many people view both the past and the present. Smash the patriarchy, damn it.

Overall, I gave this book 4 stars. The research and information provided is very interesting. I don’t know what I was expecting at the start of this book… I think I expected more of the fictional stories told by each of the five women but this is a non-fiction story. more structured. Like a historical documentary. Just be prepared for that kind of narrative. Also, before listening, make sure you are ready to pay attention to the details because sometimes I get lost if I don’t pay close attention. Overall, definitely a good listen.
