The Flame Bearer / The Last Kingdom Series, Book 10 – Audiobook Online
The Flame Bearer is the tenth and final book in Bernard Cornwell’s The Last Kingdom series. The story follows Uhtred, a warrior in ninth-century England who has fought for both the Saxons and the Danes. In this book, he is in his sixties and back in Northumbria, where he is serving King Edward, the ruler of Wessex, who is trying to unite England. Uhtred is battling with his own mortality as well as his desire for revenge against his arch-nemesis, the warrior Sigtryggr.
Meanwhile, his daughter Stiorra is dealing with her own challenges as she is kidnapped by Sigtryggr’s son, Cnut. Uhtred sets out to rescue her, but his plans are complicated by the fact that Stiorra has fallen in love with Cnut. As the story unfolds, both Uhtred and Stiorra find themselves caught up in the battles of kings and armies, but also in the personal struggles of love and loyalty. Uhtred must finally confront Sigtryggr in a final, epic battle, while Stiorra must choose between her loyalty to her father and her love for Cnut.
In the end, Uhtred emerges as a legendary figure, a warrior and a leader who helped to shape the destiny of England. The Flame Bearer is a fitting end to the epic tale of Uhtred and his fight for his people and his land.
The Flame Bearer / The Last Kingdom Series, Book 10, Audiobook Online By: Bernard Cornwell
The sequel to Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling series chronicles the epic story of Britain’s creation, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (Observer, London) – the basis for The Last Kingdom , the hit TV series is coming to Netflix in Fall 2016.
Ever since the day it was stolen from me, I’ve dreamed of retaking Bebbanburg. The great fortress was built on a rock almost like an island. It is massive; it can only be reached on land by a single narrow road; and it’s mine.
Britain is in an uncomfortable state of peace. The Viking king of Northumbria, Sigtryggr, and the Saxon queen of Mercia, Aethelflaed, agreed to an armistice. And so England’s greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, finally has a chance to regain the house his treacherous uncle stole from him years ago – and the house his brother they full of his intrigue still occupy.
But his unshakable fate, the enemies Uhtred made, and the oaths he swore combine to distract him from his dream of retaking Bebbanburg. New enemies join the fight for the kingdom of England: the venerable Constantin of Scotland seizes the opportunity to conquer and lead his army south. Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of destruction.
But Uhtred was determined that nothing, neither new enemies nor old enemies combined against him, would stop him from his inheritance. He’s the Lord of Bebbanburg, but he’ll need all the skills he’s learned in his life of war to make his dreams come true. The latest chapter in Bernard Cornwell’s “engaging, violent historical tale,” The Flame Bearer confirms Bernard Cornwell’s title as “perhaps the greatest historical adventure writer today.” (Washington Post).
This is one of the most interesting series I have heard. Of course you must accept the bloodshed and mixing of the gods but, that said, you join Uhtred in his desires and conquests and worry for him for until he somehow manages to win. Spinners (fate) must have enjoyed weaving this life. I can’t wait for the next book and hope there will be one.
I love this show and the books. They tell a similar story but not quite the same details so it always makes things interesting. This book doesn’t give me the same excitement as he did when he was finally in Bebbanburg, but I’m still looking forward to continuing the series.
