From the bestselling author of The Lioness of Morocco and The Elephant Keeper’s Daughter, comes the story of an ambitious young woman who discovers friendship, love, and her own identity on the eve of World War I.
Christmas 1889. A baby was born in the early hours at Vienna General Hospital, only to be abandoned by his unwanted mother and given to a foundry home and loving caretaker of the It.
Fanny Schindler grew from a precocious girl into a strong-willed young woman. Undeterred by the station’s rules, she is determined to rise above her humble background and pursue her dream at all costs, becoming an apprentice for one of the sexiest fashion houses. in Austria – Hungary. All the while, as Fanny searches for a sense of belonging, her path meets three people who will change her future. For one, she is a beloved friend. For another, a soul mate. And when long-buried secrets about Fanny’s past come to light, she must decide what really matters – and what’s worth fighting for in a new world of infinite possibilities end.
This is a great novel, full of history, but never boring. There is love and affairs, but never too graphic. I don’t know much about WW1, so it’s nice to know about it, even though it’s not an important part of the story. And I especially like the last chapter, where they explain what reality is and where freedom has been exercised. Great novel, very interesting.
I love this book and all it deals with. Fanny’s rejection, saved by the woman’s love and kindness, saw her rough start. Her determination in life to not only settle down for her proper “station” in life has created a life beyond her dreams. Life was difficult for her. It’s unbearable for her to love someone she can’t have. Overcoming many obstacles in life, she finally achieved what she wanted.
