Their parents are often absent, preoccupied with their own interests, and the children must learn to fend for themselves. As the children grow older, they begin to realize the negative effects their parents’ choices have had on their lives. Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose stubborn ideals and mismatches were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls have four children.

At first, they lived as nomads, moving between the desert towns of the Southwest, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, while sober, captured the imaginations of his children, teaching them physics, geology and, above all, how to embrace life courageously.

Rose Mary, who draws and writes and is unable to shoulder the responsibility of providing for her family, calls herself an “excitement junkie”. Cooking a meal that will be consumed in 15 minutes is unappealing when she can create a picture that can last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the street life faded, Walls retreated to the bleak West Virginia mining town – and his family – Rex Walls did whatever it took to escape. He drinks. He stole groceries and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalates, Jeannette and her siblings must fend for themselves, support each other as they overcome their parents’ betrayal and, ultimately, find their source. strength and will to leave home.

The amazing thing about Jeannette Walls is not only that she has the courage, perseverance, and intelligence to get out, but also that she describes her parents with deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph over all difficulties, but also a tender, touching tale of unconditional love in a family that, despite the family’s profound flaws, gave She is fiercely determined to create a successful life on her own terms.

For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her origins. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to writer John Taylor.

One of the best stories ever. It took me a while to get used to the voice, but once I got used to it, I really loved it and even bought another book of hers. What a life and very well said. Can imagine everything. Would love to meet Jeannette Walls.

This book is somewhat heartbreaking and uplifting. It’s amazing how she went through that childhood and became as successful as she is today. I was appalled by some aspects of her childhood, but then some of the lessons her parents taught were quite profound. I read this book for a book club I’m in, and I’m so glad I did.
