The Great Influenza By: John M. Barry – Audiobook Online

“The Great Influenza” is a historical account of the 1918 flu pandemic, which killed millions of people worldwide. The book details the origins and spread of the virus, as well as the scientific efforts to understand and combat it. It also explores the social and political implications of the outbreak, including its impact on public health policies and the medical profession. Overall, the book provides a comprehensive overview of one of the most devastating pandemics in human history.

In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, the deadliest influenza virus in history broke out at a military barracks in Kansas, moving east with American troops, then exploded, killing about 100 million people worldwide. It has killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death has killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first clash between modern science and epidemics.

Authoritative in terms of perspective and depth of research, The Great Influenza weaves together multiple stories, featuring characters ranging from William Welch, founder of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, to John D. Rockefeller and Woodrow Wilson. Ultimately a story of triumph in the midst of tragedy, this crisis provides us with an accurate and sobering model as we face the epidemic lurking on our own horizon.

The book is very comprehensive trying to figure out not only when and where but also why the flu occurs. The purpose of this article is to describe the state of medicine in the world at the time (mainly in the United States). It then describes the event. This is the horror part. At the end it describes the current state of medicine – another scary part. It could happen again.
