The youngest of her parents’ 21 children, Sarah Frey grew up on a struggling farm in southern Illinois, often farming, catching or hunting dinner with her brothers. She spent most of her childhood dreaming of running away to the big city – or really anywhere with central heating. At the age of 15, she left the family home and started her own fresh produce business with just an old pickup truck.

Two years later, when the family farm faced inevitable foreclosure, Frey gave up her dream of escaping, taking over the farm and starting her own manufacturing company. Refusing to play by traditional rules, at 17, she began walking into boardrooms full of suits, making deals with the nation’s biggest retailers. Her early negotiations became so legendary that Harvard Business School published some of her deals as case studies, and they became student favorites.

Today, her family-run company, Frey Farms, has grown into one of America’s largest growers and transporters of fresh produce, with farmland spanning seven states. Thanks to the millions of melons and pumpkins she sells every year, Frey has been dubbed the “Pumpkin Queen of America” by the national press.
