Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in England as the author of the Maigret books, his rich output of more than 400 novels and short stories has made him a familiar name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life.
Linda Coverdale is an award-winning translator of many French works and has been honored with the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters for her contributions to French literature.
