The Hollow Crown / The Wars Of The Roses And The Rise Of The Tudors, Audiobook Online By: Dan Jones
The 15th century saw England’s crown change hands seven times as England’s great houses fought to the death for power, majesty and rule.
The Hollow Crown completes Dan Jones’ epic history of medieval England and describes how the Plantagenets tore themselves apart to be eventually replaced by the Tudors.
Some of the greatest heroes and villains in English history have rallied together in these tumultuous times: Henry V, whose victory at Agincourt and prudent rule at home marked the culmination. high of medieval monarchy; Edward IV, who was crowned by the scheming soldier Warwick the Kingmaker, before their alliance collapsed in a fight to the death; and the last Plantagenet, Richard III, who stole the throne and murdered his own grandsons, the Princes of the Tower. Finally, the Tudors arrived – but even their rule was only secured in the 1520s, when Henry VIII ruthlessly hunted down the last remaining enemies of his family.
In the midst of this chaos, chivalry was revived, the printing press appeared, and the Renaissance began to flourish. With vivid descriptions of the battle of Towton, where 28,000 people died in a single morning, and the Battle of Bosworth Field, where Richard III was slain, here’s the true story behind the famous historical plays of Shakespeare.
I really enjoyed this wonderful and scholarly story that vividly recreates the divisive events of the 15th century when the Wars of the Roses tore the country apart before the final conquest of the Tudor dynasty. I found it helpful to remind myself of the pedigrees of the various contenders through an online website as the respective rankings are complicated due to the absence of direct lineage from Edward III. This period of history is so rife with events that it makes for an engaging listening that is brilliantly narrated by the author.
I mainly understand WotR through Shakespeare and television, this book really helped me understand more about the context and details. It allows me to understand family lines and connect points between people and events. Dan Jones has read his work well and now I will definitely be looking for more of it. Highly recommended.
