“The Iron Flower” is the second book in the “Black Witch Chronicles” by Laurie Forest, narrated by Julia Whelan. The novel continues the story of the young mage Elloren Gardner, who is struggling to find her place in a world where magic is feared and oppressed. At the start of the book, Elloren is on the run from the Mage Council after her involvement in a rebellion against their tyrannical rule. Dark forces are on the rise in the sweeping sequel to the Black Witch by critically acclaimed author Laurie Forest.

Elloren Gardner and her friends only managed to correct some mistakes when they rescued a Selkie and freed a military dragon. The last thing they expected was to be thrust into a kingdom-wide underground resistance against the Gardnerian conquest.

As the Resistance struggles to resist the harsh rulings of the Sorcerer Council, more and more Gardnerian soldiers enter the University… led by none other than Lukas Grey, now the commander. of a nearby military base. Although Elloren tries to keep his distance from him, Lukas is determined to bind himself to her, still believing she is the heir to the powers of the Black Witch, a magical legacy that will determine his future. all Erthia. As his own magic calls to her, seeking to awaken a dark force within, Elloren finds it increasingly difficult to believe that she is truly powerless, as her uncle always claims.

As she navigates a dangerous stream of rebellion, Elloren must find a way to stay true to what she knows to be right and protect those she loves… even if it means protecting them from herself.

Great continuation of the first book. I was told that the most surprising thing in this book for me was Yvan’s revelation but I’ve already guessed that part. However, it is surprising to learn that Icaral is part of the dragon! It was definitely an unexpected turn, as was his kiss with Elloren to bond him to her.

I love this series of books, they are very well written and there are many intricate details in the text. The pace of the story makes this book hard to put down.
