The Last American Hero – Audiobook Online

“The Last American Hero” is a biography of John Glenn, a pioneering astronaut and one of America’s most revered public figures. The book explores Glenn’s early life, his military career, his achievements as an astronaut, and his later political career. It also delves into the personal and professional challenges that he faced, including his struggle with depression and his controversial second career as a politician. The book paints a vivid portrait of a man who embodied the best of America’s spirit of exploration, perseverance, and service.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became a national star. That morning at Cape Canaveral, a small-town boy from Ohio sat on a rocket and soared into space. He became famous all over the world not only as the first American to orbit the Earth but also as the first astronaut to bring humanity with him. Refusing to let that dramatic day define his life, he went on to become a four-term U.S. senator – and returned to space at the age of 77. America’s last hero was an audit. Amazing investigation of the layers that make up man: a Cold War hero, a two-time astronaut, a veteran senator, a devoted husband and father, and more. At a time when an increasingly skeptical world needs heroes, John Glenn’s light burns brightly in the American memory.

An engaging and excellent read about a remarkable individual. This book is filled with fun facts – especially when you get to the chapter regarding Mercury 7’s selection of original astronauts. His previous accomplishments as a fighter pilot is heroic material but the chapters deal with Freedom 7’s flight, its aftermath, Glenn’s relationship with the Kennedys (especially Bobby), his ups and downs in political career, and finally his trip His flying on the space shuttle as a senior was really engaging. Many times I stopped reading to discuss with my wife interesting details about the lives of John Glenn and Annie that I never fully knew. Highly recommend to anyone who followed the space race and the tumultuous 1960s.

This is a satisfying, well-written biography of a man who is much more than the rather stereotypical image of an astronaut most of us have carried with us since childhood. We’ve heard a lot about Mercury’s maiden flight, but it’s been fun to learn more about John Glenn’s personal life, his successes and failures, and, above all, his enduring commitment to public service. This book shows how thoroughly he’s been praised–read it when you need some inspiration, you’ll be glad you did!
