The Last Full Measure – Audiobook Online

The Last Full Measure is the third book in the Civil War Trilogy written by Jeff Shaara. It was published in 1998 and continues the narrative of the American Civil War, focusing on the final years of the conflict. The novel follows the lives of several key historical figures and provides a detailed account of their experiences during this tumultuous period.

The story begins in 1864, with General Ulysses S. Grant taking command of the Union Army. Grant devises a strategy to defeat the Confederate forces led by General Robert E. Lee. The book explores Grant’s determination to bring an end to the war and his relentless pursuit of victory.

The narrative also delves into the perspectives of other notable figures such as Joshua Chamberlain, George Pickett, Winfield Scott Hancock, and James Longstreet. These characters provide different viewpoints on the war and its consequences, adding depth and complexity to the story.

As the war progresses, both sides suffer heavy casualties and face numerous challenges. The book vividly portrays the brutal realities of battle, capturing the horrors and sacrifices endured by soldiers on both sides. It also highlights the political struggles within each army and the personal conflicts faced by individual commanders.

One of the central events depicted in The Last Full Measure is the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place in July 1863. Shaara skillfully recreates this pivotal moment in history, offering a detailed account of the three-day battle and its significance in shaping the outcome of the war.

Throughout the novel, Shaara explores themes such as leadership, honor, sacrifice, and the human cost of war. He delves into the motivations and emotions of his characters, providing readers with a deeper understanding of their actions and decisions.

In addition to its historical accuracy, The Last Full Measure is praised for its engaging storytelling and well-developed characters. Shaara’s writing style effectively brings the past to life, immersing readers in the events and emotions of the Civil War.

Overall, The Last Full Measure is a compelling and comprehensive portrayal of the final years of the American Civil War. Through its richly detailed narrative and well-crafted characters, the book offers a thought-provoking exploration of this pivotal period in American history.

In the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara created the best Civil War novel of our time, an enduring bestseller that has sold more than two million copies. In the best-selling book Gods and Generals, Shaara’s son Jeff brilliantly supports his father’s vision, telling the epic tale of events culminating in the Battle of Gettysburg. Now, Jeff Shaara brings this legendary father-son trio to a stunning conclusion in a novel that enlivens the final two years of the Civil War.

When Full Measure finally unfolded, Gettysburg was over and the war entered its brutal third year. On the Union side, the gap between politicians in Washington and generals on the battlefield widened. Never before had the bulky Union Army needed such a determined, tough leader. It was at this crucial moment that Lincoln gave Ulysses S. Grant command – and turned the tide of war.

For Robert E. Lee, Gettysburg was a disaster beyond words – combined with the devastating loss of the flaming Stonewall Jackson two months earlier. Lee knew better than anyone that the South could not survive a war of attrition. But with the absolute devotion of the generals – Longstreet, Hill, Stuart – and unwavering faith in God, Lee was determined to fight to the end.

This is also Joshua Chamberlain, the college professor who rose to prominence as a hero of the Gettysburg Confederacy — and who would rise to become one of the Civil War’s greatest figures.

Battle by incredible battle, Shaara dramatizes the escalating confrontation between Lee and Grant – complex, heroic, deeply troubled men. From the costly Wild Battle to the painful siege of Petersburg to Lee’s epochal surrender at Appomattox, Shaara portrays the Civil War’s gripping conclusion through the minds and hearts of individuals who have offer their last resort.

Filled with human passion and enchanting historical truth, The Last Full Measure is the right cornerstone for a great literary trilogy.

Jeff is almost as good as his father was. Covering several battles is no easy task, but, he does it well. Narration is excellent. A great idea at dialogue, or at least, what they might’ve sounded like back then. 10/10.

Definitely one of the best!! I would like to see this book, turned into a movie, just like Gods and generals, and the movie Gettysburg.
Excellent retelling of history! If only history were taught this way in school, many would love and learn from it.
