The Last Time We Say Goodbye is a young adult contemporary novel written by Cynthia Hand. It was published in 2015 and explores themes of grief, guilt, and healing. The story follows Lex, a high school senior who is struggling to cope with the sudden death of her younger brother, Tyler.

The novel begins with Lex attending a support group for teens who have lost loved ones to suicide. Lex’s brother took his own life a few months prior, and she is haunted by guilt and unanswered questions. She blames herself for not being able to save him and constantly wonders if there was something she could have done differently.

Throughout the book, Lex navigates her way through the stages of grief, from denial to anger to acceptance. She struggles with her relationships with her parents, who are also grieving, and her best friend, who tries to be supportive but doesn’t fully understand what Lex is going through.

Lex finds solace in writing letters to her brother as a way to express her feelings and thoughts. These letters serve as a form of therapy for her and allow her to process her emotions. She also forms a connection with a boy named Cole, who has experienced loss himself and understands what she is going through.

As the story progresses, Lex begins to unravel the truth behind Tyler’s suicide. She discovers that he was struggling with depression and had been keeping it hidden from everyone. This revelation brings both closure and more questions for Lex, but ultimately helps her come to terms with his death.

“The Last Time We Say Goodbye” is a poignant exploration of grief and its impact on individuals and families. It delves into the complex emotions that arise after losing a loved one to suicide and highlights the importance of communication, understanding, and seeking help during times of crisis.

There is death all around us.

We just weren’t paying attention.

Until we do.

The last time Lex was happy, it was before. When she has a complete family. A boyfriend she loves. The friends didn’t look at her as if she could collapse at any moment.

Now she’s just the girl whose brother killed herself. And it looks like that’s all she’s going to be.

As Lex begins to settle back into her life, she tries to stop what happened the night Tyler died. But there’s a secret she hasn’t told anyone yet – one text Tyler sent could change everything.

Lex’s brother is gone. But Lex is about to discover that a ghost doesn’t have to be real to stop you from moving on.

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand, The Last Time We Say Goodbye is a beautiful and heartbreaking story about love, loss, and letting go.

This really exceeded my expectations. For the most part, I don’t want to put it down! It’s a very comprehensive novel, combining love, loss, strength, family, relationships, secrets, surprises, healing, and more. The main characters are easy to like and I find myself liking them all. Although the main theme of the plot is not a happy one, the novel continues to shine. I laughed, I was wonderfully touched and surprised. I read it constantly, and this is one of my favorite novels of the year so far. I will check the author again, for sure! The narration is amazing, I adore Julia Whelan and in my opinion her performance here elevates the novel. I ran out of money and bought this, and it was worth every penny!
