Sweetbitter meets The Nightingale in this anti-pause novel about a woman who returns to her family’s vineyard in Burgundy and unexpectedly discovers a lost diary, an unknown relative, and a secret, secret that her family had kept since World War II.

To become one of only a few hundred certified wine professionals in the world, Kate must pass the notoriously difficult Master of Wine exam. She had failed twice before; Her third attempt will be her last chance. Suddenly finding herself jobless and a few months before her exams, she heads to Burgundy to spend the autumn on a vineyard that has belonged to her family for generations. There, she was able to cement her meager knowledge of Burgundian wines and reconnect with her cousin Nico and his wife, Heather, who now oversee the day-to-day management of the grapes. The person Kate wants to avoid is Jean-Luc, a talented young winemaker and her first love.

At the vineyard, Kate eagerly helps her cousin clean up a huge basement filled with generations of discarded and forgotten furniture. Deep inside the cellar, behind a large cupboard, she discovers a secret room containing a cot, several Resistance pamphlets, and a huge stock of precious wine. Excited by the secret space, Kate sets out to dig into her family’s history – a search that takes her back to the dark days of World War Two and introduces her to a relative she knows. never known, a teenage half-aunt. during the Nazi occupation.

As she learns more about her family, the line between protest and cooperation blurs, prompting Kate to find answers to two key questions: Who exactly helped her family through the difficult years. Of war? And what happened to the six valuable bottles of wine that seemed to have disappeared from the cellar’s collection?

Historical fiction brings many new insights into life. When the Nazis invaded France, farmers and vineyards were devastated, the people starved. All of the atrocities we’ve read about before were on their Jews and everyone who resisted suffered the consequences (and there was a massive protest movement in France. The protagonists of this story are the women of the area, from the resistance era and descendants of modern times. Their lives are intertwined as shocking discoveries are made.

Saskia Maarleveld has done a great job voicing a variety of characters from different linguistic backgrounds in this delightful novel that blends current life in San Francisco and Burgundy France with World War II Vichy France. I love following Kate and Helen’s lives during the ordeal. I would recommend it to wine lovers and World War II fans.
