Esther Diamond’s year got off to a rough start when NYPD Detective Connor Lopez, who slept with her and then didn’t call, shut down the Little Italy restaurant where Esther worked in between acting jobs and left her alone arrested.

After her escape from handcuffs, Esther plays a small role in a film project for graduate students in Chinatown – where her friend, retired assassin Lucky Battistuzzi, is hiding in an original Italian morgue Flower.

Esther and Lucky quickly realize that something strange is going on in Chinatown, where mysterious gourmet fortune cookies are casting deadly mystical curses on victims. Unlucky recipients receive them as gifts – and before long, Esther learns that Detective Lopez is one of the recipients. As the preparations for the Lunar New Year heat up, when the icy streets will be filled with lion dancers, firecrackers and dense crowds, Esther and Lucky summon the help of their friend Max. , a semi-immortal magician, to help them save Chinatown and Lopez – even though he doesn’t deserve it – from the threat of a mad killer.

Laura Resnick is back in shape with “Misfortune Cookie,” her sixth Esther Diamond urban fantasy novel. Resnick cleverly weaves multiple storylines together, providing the reader with more information about Esther and all of the supporting characters. This is a page -turning book, with fascinating subplots about Max’s love life, Lopez’s work and family, and Lucky’s friends. Almost all of the action takes place in a new NYC hotspot, Chinatown. The romance between Esther and Lopez is more original than the previous book, which I found to be a satisfying return. Well worth paying full price for.

With each successful Esther Diamond novel, Laura Resnick increasingly perfects her character. And as always, you learn a lot about real – life places, events, and things because Resnick actually does the research. In Misfortune Cookie, despite her disdain for Detective Lopez, when she sees his life in danger, Esther feels she must *do* something. Personally, I’d rather let Lopez go hiking in favor of the other guy, but hey. A great jaunt that really puts you in the middle of New York’s Chinatown during New Year’s festivities.
