The Moving Finger – Audiobook Online

The Moving Finger is a novel by Agatha Christie featuring the detective Miss Marple. Set in the small town of Lymstock, the story begins with the arrival of an anonymous letter that accuses several residents of scandalous behavior. When the town’s postmistress is found dead, Miss Marple becomes involved in the investigation along with her friend, the narrator Jerry Burton.

As the town becomes increasingly rife with suspicion and fear, Miss Marple’s expertise in human behavior helps her to uncover a web of deceit and murder. Ultimately, she manages to identify the killer, who is revealed to be someone unexpected. The novel ends with the restoration of order in the community and a sense of justice being served.

The indomitable detective Miss Marple is led to a small town with embarrassing secrets in Agatha Christie’s classic detective story, The Moving Finger.

Lymstock is a town filled with scandalous secrets—a town where even a sudden outbreak of anonymous hate letters causes only a small stir.

But that all changed when one of the recipients, Mrs. Symmington, committed suicide. Her final note said “I cannot continue”, but Ms Marple questioned the coroner’s suicide verdict. Soon no one is sure of anyone—for secrets are no longer shameful and begin to become dangerous.

Listen to this book if for no other reason Richard E. Grant is the perfect storyteller.

I think this is my first Mrs. Marple mystery in book form. And it’s very different from Joan Hickson’s variety drama. Mainly because the book is written from a different character’s first-person perspective. And in this case at least, Mrs. Marple is hardly part of the story. In fact, she doesn’t appear until deep into the story. She is used mainly to reveal the killer and the motive.

The story revolves around anonymous letters sent to a small village. The narrator is the pilot recovering from a flight accident. He and his sister are renting a house in Lymstock while he recovers. The rest of the cast are locals who receive hateful letters. There’s a little bit of romance, a little bit of charm, and a lot of local color. A fun diversion for a summer day.
