The Mysterious Affair at Styles – Audiobook Online

“The Mysterious Affair at Styles” is the first book in the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie. The story takes place in an English country estate, Styles Court. There, Mrs. Emily Inglethorp, the wealthy owner of the estate, is murdered. The victim has recently remarried and it’s unclear who stands to benefit from her murder. Hercules Poirot, a Belgian detective, is brought in to investigate the case. As Poirot collects and analyzes evidence and interviews suspects, he uncovers a web of secrets and lies among the guests at Styles Court. The list of suspects includes family members, neighbors, and acquaintances, each with their own motives. Eventually, Poirot solves the mystery and reveals the true murderer in Christie’s classic style.

This classic story of intrigue by Agatha Christie marks the debut of the iconic Hercule Poirot and keeps listeners guessing until the very end.

Delivered in a charming English accent and carefully paced by Nadia May, the tale poses the question of whether one of the Cavendish brothers or Mrs. Iglethorp’s new husband was responsible for her poisoning. Each character, particularly Poirot, is expertly characterized and makes for a compelling listen. The search for truth is a powerful motivator for all involved. Ralph Cosham, a British-born narrator, has recorded more InAudio books than any other narrator, earning him numerous awards.

Meanwhile, Adams Morgan narrates, acts, and creates music in New York City.

It’s unusual for a first book by any author to be as complete, well-written, and enjoyable as The Mystery of Styles. It was as if Mrs. Christie had been honing her skills for years. However, as the world will soon know, the best is yet to come.

Although I typically steer clear of murder mysteries, I decided to venture into the genre and read an Agatha Christie book. Opting for her debut Poirot novel, first published in 1920, I was immediately struck by how prolific Christie was–juggling complicated crimes and obscure clues, all while maintaining a fast pace. Despite my initial skepticism, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found myself unable to deduce who the culprit was. Christie’s intellectual approach to mysteries, where every character was a suspect and the detective was required to gather them all to unveil deductions, set a precedent for the genre. Her books are packed full of unpredictable twists and turns–it’s no wonder they remain so popular.

Agatha Christie is a very skilled writer. Affair at Styles doesn’t read like a first novel, nor does Poirot look like anything other than an established character. It seemed he had been living inside her head for a while, rather, born of a challenge from Mrs. Christie’s sister. This is a good mystery. I never suspected the real killer.
