Their adventure spans a beautiful but sparsely populated and dangerous continent, the windswept grasslands of Ice Age Europe, causing the pair to meet strangers. Some will be intrigued by Ayla and Jondalar, with their many creative skills, including taming wild horses and wolves; others will stay away from them, intimidated by what they cannot understand; and some will threaten them. But Ayla, with no memory of her people, and Jondalar, longing to return to him, are driven by their own deep drive to continue their journey through the breathtaking center of an unmapped world to find a place they can both call home.

I really like that Auel explores the culture of the people she writes about in her novels. Even though she can be very liberal with her imagination when she attributes a lot of inventions to Ayla and Jandalar, I still love hearing about different people’s way of life. For example, how they used different constructions for housing and different methods of hunting. Plus the spiritual practices and rituals associated with them are very interesting. The two main characters are of course well developed and likable. They are great people, but they also have flaws. I recommend this book.

What a wonderful and heartbreaking story. How many times I held my breath waiting for the results but tears flowed. I love how the story helped take me on this amazing journey. Jean M. Auel did it again. I’m excited to start a new book and sad to know these will be the last two.
