The Pump House Gang – Audiobook Online
The Pump House Gang is a collection of essays written by Tom Wolfe in the 1960s, which provides a glimpse into the youth culture and counterculture of that time. The essays describe the lives and adventures of a group of surfers, bikers, and other young people who frequent the Pump House, a concrete structure in a California beach town. Wolfe documents their wild parties, drug use, sexual exploits, and general rebellion against societal norms. He also explores the dynamics of their friendships, rivalries, and insecurities.
Through this portrayal, Wolfe offers a critique of the conformity and materialism of American society, while also acknowledging the limitations and flaws of the countercultural movement. Overall, The Pump House Gang is a vivid and entertaining portrait of a particular time and place, while also touching on broader themes and issues of its era.

Seeking new forms of status and power, the author travels from La Jolla to London in search of the most extravagant heroes of the 1960s subculture.
Renowned author Wolfe wrote this series of short stories in the mid-60s, depicting a changing America, leaving the framework of class structure and European luxury for something different. Something will develop in our country to this day, where people are less concerned with status systems. It was a fascinating period that Wolfe identified and captured earlier than most social observers.
However, the stories ranged from a group of surfers in La Jolla who didn’t want to do normal work, to Hugh Hefner’s “thumbs up” on the sex society, to the new working habits of young people living in London. And here are some of the problems with the book. You may like some stories but they are so varied, you may hate others. I find myself revisiting Wolfe’s books as they provide expert commentary over the past 40 years. This one I find uneven but still interesting.
If you grew up in the sixties like me, this is a must read. No one writes like Tom Wolfe and you will instinctively feel part of what’s going on. Read other Tom Wolfe books and you’ll laugh every time you turn the page.
Great book, one of the characters in the book Nelander is a personal friend of ours. He was the one who told us about the book.
