I really like these stories. I agree with other reviewers who have noted that they provide an early history of Kurt Wallander. The story entitled “Pyramid” is extraordinary. It reminded me of Fellini with some pictures: his tough and eccentric father and a later trip to Egypt that forced Wallender to go there to get him out of prison. Hard to explain unless you’ve read it, which I encourage you to read.

This is a great collection of stories. I was a little annoyed with the short story setup, but it worked great. I thought it started off a bit slow with his first case but once I got into the mystery, I was hooked.

His first volume concerns a case by Wallander in 1990 when Wallander was a 42-year-old senior detective. After completing eight full-length novels about Wallander and after receiving requests from readers, Mankell decided to write short stories that told his first detective stories. These five stories were collected in the Pyramid.
