The Pyramid is the long-awaited addition to Henning Mankell’s world-best-selling and critically-acclaimed Kurt Wallander mystery series – a book of five short mysteries that takes us back to the beginning. Here are the stories that follow, chronologically, Wallander’s growth from a rookie cop to a young father and then a middle-aged divorcee, shedding light on how Wallander became a first-rate detective and highlighting new sides of a character that has become a classic.

I really like these stories. I agree with other reviewers who have noted that they provide an early history of Kurt Wallander. The story entitled “Pyramid” is extraordinary. It reminded me of Fellini with some pictures: his tough and eccentric father and a later trip to Egypt that forced Wallender to go there to get him out of prison. Hard to explain unless you’ve read it, which I encourage you to read.
This is a great collection of stories. I was a little annoyed with the short story setup, but it worked great. I thought it started off a bit slow with his first case but once I got into the mystery, I was hooked.
After the phenomenal success of the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson’s three novels, a wave of interest in reading other Swedish crime novels grew. Many turned to Hemming Mankell, who had successfully sold his Kurt Wallander detective thrillers and TV series based on some of them. The crime book Mankell’s Wallander was first published in Sweden in 1991 and in English in 1997. His first volume concerns a case by Wallander in 1990 when Wallander was a 42-year-old senior detective. After completing eight full-length novels about Wallander and after receiving requests from readers, Mankell decided to write short stories that told his first detective stories. These five stories were collected in the Pyramid.
