The Reverse of the Medal – Audiobook Online
“The Reverse of the Medal” is the 11th book in the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian, narrated by Patrick Tull. The novel is set in the early 19th century and follows the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship’s surgeon, Stephen Maturin. The book begins with Aubrey facing a court-martial for allegedly granting a royal pardon to a notorious pirate, which is against British law. This puts his career in jeopardy, and he is at risk of losing his reputation and his rank in the Navy.
Maturin, who is also a spy for the British government, is tasked with investigating the pirate’s connections to the French intelligence service. This leads him on a dangerous mission that takes him across Europe and into the heart of enemy territory. As Maturin works to uncover the truth, Aubrey is faced with an ultimatum – either risk being court-martialed or become a spy for the British government. Aubrey reluctantly accepts the offer, and soon he and Maturin find themselves working together on a mission that involves a daring voyage and a tense confrontation with the French Navy. As they navigate through treacherous waters and face various challenges, they must also confront their own personal struggles and relationships. The book culminates in an exciting and unexpected twist as the truth behind the pirate’s connections is finally revealed.
Overall, “The Reverse of the Medal” is a thrilling adventure that showcases O’Brian’s masterful storytelling and attention to historical detail.

- Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 11
- Narrated by: Patrick Tull
Jack Aubrey returns to London after a successful mission. On the advice of an acquaintance, he used the time to invest some of his winnings. However, when investments linked him to London’s powerful criminal element and sent him to prison, it appeared he had lost his captaincy and H.M.S. Surprise. Once again, the ship’s surgeon and secret agent Stephen Maturin must rescue his hapless friend.
Just when you think you’ve seen enough of the series, around the time the man who hated tattooed Polynesian girls sailing the seas seeking to rob men of masculinity with obsidian knives appeared on the Other Side of the World, and you were craving some heroic naval action, you probably sighed heavily as you read the description of this book. You may also have read about the career of Thomas Cochrane – the real Royal Navy Captain who inspired O’Brian’s Jack – and are grimacing, knowing what’s to come.
Please buy this book. Read it, listen to it, find some way to get it into your brain any way you like. Despite the pain, anguish, and wrathful forces united against Aubrey, this book has the most moving scene in the series. As one O’Brian critic once said, “I wouldn’t say I cried, but I wouldn’t say I didn’t.”
