In 1920s Manhattan, Magnus Bane mingles with the elite in a glamorous Jazz Age hotspot. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.

Immortal Magnus Bane is making the most of his time in Roaring Twenties: He’s settled into New York society and is thriving in trendy jazz circles. And there’s no better place to see and be seen than the glamorous Dumort Hotel, a sparkling new addition to the Manhattan landscape. But a different kind of seduction may be at work…

This electronic-only stand-alone short story illuminates the life of enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose charming personality featured prominently on the pages of the New York Times #1 bestsellers, The Mortal Instruments series and The Infernal Devices. This story in The Bane Chronicles, The Rise of the Hotel Dumort, was written by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson.

The fifth entry in the series, of the hit and miss category, is a pretty strong entry in the series. I would probably consider it my second favorite short story out of all the stories released to date, with the third short story remaining my favorite.

The latest entry found Magnus Bane running a speakeasy at the end of Roaring Twenties. Magnus is enjoying a time of illegal drinking, free-flowing money and luxury. He is content to spend his days drinking, partying, and taking various lovers until a strange rumor from the underworld gets his attention. At first, Magnus just ignored the rumour, but changed his mind when someone challenged him about his easygoing lifestyle. The outcome of his involvement gives him a few surprises near the end of the story.

For those who have said that they really don’t like the claustrophobic feel of some of the other entries, they will be pleased to read this story. There is no appeal in it and the pacing in this story is very good. I’m glad to see Magnus taking the initiative in this story, even if it’s fueled by his perception that others expect him to sit idly by and do nothing. The part with Shadowhunters was great, although I wish they had spent a little more time developing this at the end. I also love seeing the old witch character briefly mentioned in the TMI series.

The only real limitation I’ve had is the epilogue and the epilogue. I wish the ending had a few more pages to complete it. For example, I’d like to know if the Shadowhunters did anything to make up for their previous behavior at the end of the incident or if it was some sort of old-fashioned thing of the elite. I also wish that the Shadowhunters involved at the end were given names, especially the bow wielder. Also, the final reveal, while not exactly surprising, left me feeling a bit uneasy as the motives for what happened in the story baffled me.

That being said, these issues aren’t really a big deal. I enjoyed reading this short story and I would recommend it to other fans of the series. Great background on the history of the infamous Dumort hotel. It’s an interesting piece of history, not the hotel it was made of, but the era in which this took place.
