The Secret Keeper By Kate Morton – Audiobook Online

The Secret Keeper is a novel written by Kate Morton, an Australian author known for her historical fiction novels. Published in 2012, the book tells a captivating story that spans several decades and explores themes of family secrets, love, and betrayal.

The narrative of The Secret Keeper is divided into two timelines: the present day and the 1940s. The story begins with a young girl named Laurel witnessing a shocking event in her childhood that she struggles to understand. Decades later, as an adult, Laurel becomes determined to uncover the truth behind that fateful day.

In the present day timeline, Laurel is now an accomplished actress in her sixties. She returns to her childhood home, Greenacres, to celebrate her mother Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday. While reminiscing about her past, Laurel becomes haunted by memories of witnessing her mother commit a violent act against a stranger during the summer of 1941.

As Laurel delves deeper into her family’s history, she discovers that her mother had a life before she became Dorothy. Through a series of flashbacks set in the 1940s, the reader is introduced to Dorothy’s younger self, Vivien. Vivien is an ambitious and independent woman who dreams of becoming a journalist.

During World War II, Vivien works as an apprentice at a renowned London theater where she meets Jimmy Metcalfe, a charismatic actor. The two fall deeply in love amidst the chaos of war. However, their relationship becomes complicated when Vivien is assigned to work as a journalist covering the war effort.

Back in the present day, Laurel uncovers clues that lead her to believe that her mother’s violent act was somehow connected to Jimmy Metcalfe. Determined to uncover the truth, she embarks on a journey to unravel the secrets of her mother’s past.

As Laurel investigates further, she encounters various individuals who were part of Vivien’s life during the war. She meets Vivien’s childhood friend, Dorothy, who later becomes her mother. Laurel also encounters a mysterious man named Gerry, who claims to have known Vivien during the war.

Through these encounters and the piecing together of fragmented memories, Laurel gradually uncovers the truth about her mother’s past. The revelations she uncovers are both shocking and heartbreaking, forcing her to confront the complexities of love, sacrifice, and the consequences of keeping secrets.

The Secret Keeper is a beautifully crafted novel that skillfully weaves together multiple narratives and time periods. Kate Morton’s writing style is rich in detail and evocative, transporting readers to both the bustling streets of London during World War II and the idyllic English countryside.

The characters in The Secret Keeper are well-developed and relatable, each with their own secrets and motivations. Laurel is a strong and determined protagonist who undergoes a transformative journey as she unravels the mysteries of her family’s past. Vivien is portrayed as a complex and flawed character, torn between her love for Jimmy and her desire for independence.

Morton expertly explores themes of identity, memory, and the power of storytelling throughout the novel. She delves into the impact that secrets can have on individuals and families, highlighting how they can shape lives for generations.

Overall, The Secret Keeper is a gripping and emotionally charged novel that will keep readers captivated until the very end. With its intricate plot twists and compelling characters, it is a testament to Kate Morton’s talent as a storyteller.

England, 1959: 16-year-old Laurel Nicolson, is dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She follows a stranger walking the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, talking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and critically acclaimed actress living in London. She returned to Green Acres on Dorothy’s 90th birthday and found herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she hadn’t thought of in decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and rests in her own guilt. A photo of her mother and a woman Laurel had never met, named Vivian, was her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores the desires and dreams, the lengths of time some people go through to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have to endure. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and conspirators, drama and deception told against the backdrop of world-changing events.

Two things happen with a good book by Kate Morton. First, the overall experience is always a pleasure. Words that were written when read by Caroline Lee produce hours of great listening. Then there’s what Kate Morton does with a plot. In this particular case, I simply didn’t see it coming. And that’s a LOT of fun. I love being cheated and this did it. Name.

A storyteller really draws you into the story and you can imagine, being in it. Kate Morton is very insightful about that possibility. I fell in love with all of her books. It was strange to me because I didn’t care for the British accent in my ear. Caroline Lee is an exception. She is a great storyteller. I really appreciate a story that once you start, you won’t be able to put it down until you know what to expect. An author that keeps you right in the story with those characters, that’s a gift. This story will wrap around you. It is believable, but woven with the imagination of a lovely imagination. I love it!

This is a beautiful story, well read by a great storyteller who is perfect for the book. Listen to every word. There are many things in this book. You will love it to the very last sentence. I have heard other books by Kate Morton and this is my favorite. Listen and enjoy.

I like this one, which I get based solely on the summary, as I usually wait for the listener reviews to come out.
It’s a great story, it’s the content of a novel, isn’t it? But well told in different eras with an interesting twist at the end.
