The Seventh Sacrament/ Nic Costa, Book 5, Audiobook Online By: David Hewson

It begins on one of Rome’s least known hills, the Aventino, in the public square in front of the residence of the Knights of Malta.

There, an eerie keyhole leading to the knights’ mansion reveals an astonishing view, a straight line across the Tiber to St Peter’s dome in the distance.
For seven-year-old Alessio Bramante, the act of peeking through a keyhole on the way to school every day is a ritual, a way to establish a bond with his difficult and aloof father, one of his parents. Rome’s most famous archeologist, Giorgio Bramante. Then one day, after a surprise visit to one of Giorgio’s underground excavations, Alessio disappeared. A group of students who snuck into the site, an ancient Mithraic temple, were blamed. A tragedy happened. Alessio was never found, and his father was in prison.

Fourteen years later, in a mysterious Tiber temple known as the Little Museum of Purgatory, a T-shirt belonging to Bramante’s son began to appear bloody. No one could understand how the marks had appeared behind the glass. It soon becomes clear that the newly released Giorgio Bramante is carrying out a cruel and terrifying revenge against everyone he blames for the loss of his son, and inspector Leo Falcone, a member of the original investigation team, was among his targets. In the depths of a maze he knows better than any man, a distraught father seeks revenge against those he hates.

Nic Costa, watching Falcone move restlessly in the man’s deadly arms, realizes the answer to the deadly present must lie in solving a cold case, like the forgotten Alessio Bramante, from was long considered dead and buried forever.

I think you should read this series in order although the book alone is sufficient. My very American ears/minds have some trouble keeping people straight to the book. It’s not the narrator’s fault (he’s brilliant). Those are foreign character names that I keep getting confused! I love the bit of history the book uses and suspect that those familiar with Rome will be happy to recognize landmarks etc. The story focuses on both a current criminal and a 14-year – old child. The author exposes both crimes as they progress and even with that, even though you know what’s going on, you don’t know why or doubt the ending. I am so glad I chose this book to read.

If you like David Hewson, you might find this episode of the Nic Costa series to be one of his best. Hewson continues to be a master of the mystery genre… he’s a very good writer, both in terms of plot and language. I’ve liked all the Costa stories, but this is my favorite so far. This is the same narrator used for the previous two (I think) and he’s great. If you’re new to Hewson, you might want to start at the beginning of the Costa story. I can’t wait to hear the next episode.
