The Shadowed Sun: Dreamblood, Book 2 – Audiobook Online
The Shadowed Sun by N.K. Jemisin is the second book in the Dreamblood series, and it is a captivating and thought-provoking fantasy novel. The book takes place ten years after the events of the first book, The Killing Moon, and it follows a new set of characters as they navigate a complex political and cultural landscape. The story centers around Hanani, a young woman who is training to be a healer, and Wanahomen, a prince who is struggling to reconcile his duty to his people with his own desires and morals. These two characters are brought together by a series of events that threaten to upend the delicate balance of power in the city-state of Gujaareh. One of the strengths of this book is Jemisin’s world-building. The city of Gujaareh is a rich and vividly imagined setting, full of complex social structures, religious beliefs, and philosophical debates.
The book also explores themes of colonialism, power, and resistance, as the characters grapple with the legacy of past conquests and the consequences of their own actions. The audiobook is narrated by Sarah Zimmerman, who does an excellent job bringing the characters and world to life. Her voice is clear and engaging, and she captures the emotional nuances of the story with skill and sensitivity. Overall, The Shadowed Sun is a fantastic sequel to The Killing Moon, and it is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy and social commentary. Jemisin’s writing is powerful and nuanced, and she weaves together intricate plot threads and complex themes to create a truly unforgettable story.

Gujaareh, the city of dreams, was ruled by the Kisuati Empire. A city where the only law is peace now knows violence and oppression. And nightmares. A mysterious and deadly plague haunts the people of Gujaareh, causing those infected to die screaming in their sleep. Caught between dark dreams and evil lords, the people long to rise – but Gujaareh has known peace for too long.
Someone has to show them the way.
Hope lies with two outcasts: the first woman allowed into the priesthood of the goddess of dreams, and an exiled prince desperate to regain his inheritance. Together, they must fight off the Kisuati occupation and uncover the source of the killing dreams… before Gujaareh disappears forever.
This is about a lot of things. I will talk about it as best I can without revealing. There’s a heavy theme of being a fish out of the water, getting to know other cultures and breaking some stereotypes. The author has a profound talent for creating a complex, unfamiliar setting and culture that makes sense to the reader and feels relatable. Think more deeply about right and wrong, and consider that what is right in one’s culture can be terrifying to outsiders. There’s a lot going on about gender roles, exploring whether a person can take on a role that’s typically considered belonging to the other gender, while maintaining one’s gender identity.
Which is already a pretty good book. A well told story with engaging characters. I’m slowly learning the full extent of NK Jemison’s work!
