The Skies of Pern By Anne McCaffrey – Audiobook Online

The Skies of Pern is the sixteenth book in the Dragonriders of Pern series, written by Anne McCaffrey. Published in 2001, it continues the story of the planet Pern and its inhabitants, focusing on the challenges faced by the dragonriders and their efforts to protect their world from the deadly Thread.

The book takes place several years after the events of the previous installment, *Dragon’s Kin*. Pern has undergone significant changes since then, with technological advancements and a growing population. The dragonriders, led by Weyrleader F’lessan and Weyrwoman Tai, face new challenges as they strive to maintain their traditions while adapting to a changing world.

One of the main plotlines in *The Skies of Pern* revolves around the discovery of a new continent on Pern called “Southern.” This landmass was previously unknown to the inhabitants of Pern and presents both opportunities and dangers. The dragonriders embark on expeditions to explore Southern and establish new Weyrs to protect against Threadfall.

Meanwhile, another threat emerges in the form of a group known as “Abominators.” These individuals believe that dragons are an abomination and seek to eradicate them from Pern. Led by a man named Jayge Lilcamp, who has personal reasons for hating dragons, the Abominators pose a significant danger to the dragonriders and their way of life.

As the dragonriders face these external threats, they also grapple with internal conflicts. The traditional hierarchy within the Weyrs is challenged as younger riders question established norms and seek greater autonomy. F’lessan and Tai must navigate these tensions while ensuring that their Weyr remains united in its mission to protect Pern.

Throughout the book, McCaffrey explores themes of tradition versus progress, loyalty, and the importance of unity in times of crisis. The Skies of Pern also delves into the personal lives of various characters, providing insight into their relationships, struggles, and growth.

In the end, the dragonriders successfully establish new Weyrs in Southern and manage to thwart the Abominators’ plans. However, the challenges they face are far from over, and the book sets the stage for future developments in the Dragonriders of Pern series.

Now that Pern can head towards a future free from the threat of Threadfall, people are free to leave their protective stones and spread across the planet, and improve their lives with Newly discovered ancient technology. However, not everyone is happy. Some resist change and consider anything new to be “disgusting”. And the dragon riders were uncertain: without Thread, what would their purpose be in Pernese society?

Then a new danger – again from the sky – loomed. Once again, everyone must unite… And turn to the only people who can solve the crisis: the dragon riders of Pern!

Before commenting on this story, I would like to speak with the narrator. I particularly like Dick Hill and am grateful for the consistency of his narrative across the Pern series. People who don’t like his voice have a right to their opinion, but in many cases, for me, dislike can be gender biased towards it. Personally, since the majority of the characters in the book are either male or dragon, a man’s voice makes sense, and I think Mr. Hill did a great job: he has a wide variety of character voices and Communicate a wide range of emotions effectively. So thank you Mr. Hill for MANY hours of interesting listening he has given me!

Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series is phenomenal and I really appreciate this last book as it ties together some of the loose endings I’ve been wondering about, as well as providing a glimpse into the future of Pern outside the rope is erased. The romantic love story between Tai and F’lessan takes you through all levels of emotions, from sublimation to profound, joyful satisfaction to deep sadness, to a satisfying and impressive ending.

Although I liked this story better than The Master Harper of Pern, I thought it ended a bit prematurely. It does not wrap everything in a pretty little bow or draw conclusions on many of the issues that raise it. I like to focus on the relationship of the green and bronze dragon knights. I believe the growth of Pern culture after AVIS is on the right track and I look forward to seeing it unfold.

I have read nearly everything Ann McAffery has written and love the Pern series. I’ve been reading Anne McCaffrey’s books since I was a little girl. I re-read her books every year. I like to listen so I can do other things. Thank you for a good read book. They are all good.
