The Strange Library By Haruki Murakami – Audiobook Online
The Strange Library is a novella written by the renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Published in 2005, it tells the story of a young boy who visits a peculiar library and becomes trapped in a surreal and nightmarish world.
The protagonist of the story is an unnamed boy who decides to visit his local library one day after school to return some books. As he enters the library, he notices that it is much larger and more labyrinthine than he had previously thought. The librarian, an old man with sinister intentions, leads him to a hidden room in the basement where he is told that he must read all the books he wants to borrow within a single day.
Inside the room, the boy encounters strange characters such as a sheep man who acts as his guide and a beautiful girl named Yuki who claims to be imprisoned in the library. The boy also discovers that the librarian intends to eat his brain once he finishes reading all the books. Determined to escape, the boy devises a plan with Yuki and the sheep man to outsmart the librarian.
Throughout the novella, Murakami explores themes of isolation, imagination, and the power of storytelling. The strange library serves as a metaphor for the human mind and its capacity for both knowledge and darkness. The narrative blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy, creating an eerie atmosphere that keeps readers on edge.
Murakami’s writing style in *The Strange Library* is characterized by his signature blend of magical realism and existentialism. He seamlessly weaves together elements of folklore, mythology, and everyday life to create a unique and thought-provoking narrative. The novella is also accompanied by illustrations by Chip Kidd, which add an extra layer of visual appeal to the story.
In conclusion, *The Strange Library* is a captivating and enigmatic novella that delves into the depths of imagination and explores the boundaries between reality and fiction. Murakami’s masterful storytelling and the surreal atmosphere make it a compelling read for fans of his work and those interested in thought-provoking literature.

By world-renowned author Haruki Murakami—a fantasy short novel about a boy imprisoned in a library full of nightmares.
Listeners will find themselves immersed in the strange world of best-selling author Haruki Murakami’s wild imagination. The story of a lonely boy, a mysterious girl, and a distressed shepherd man plotting their escape from a nightmare library, a book unlike any other Murakami has written.
I’m not sure if I would choose to read it if I knew the general plot. I chose it at random, and Murakami’s answer is confusing. At some point, I found myself thinking the title really should be “The Deranged Library.” As with his other works, the story makes less sense at the end. However, I find it clearer in the interpretation, if not the intention, than in his other works. I don’t mean these are negative things. If you are looking to break the silence of your mind with something dark and confusing, then I strongly recommend you read this book. Well-written story and excellent audio performance.
I’ve skipped this audiobook many times before because it’s only an hour long. Since Audible has a 50% off sale, I thought to myself that I should try “Strange Library”. I told my book club that they should read more Haruki Murakami because his writing style is so different that you can’t help but want to read more. So far, I’ve listened to all of the Murakami titles Audible has to offer.
“Strange Library” is another strange book by Haruki Murakami. A boy goes to the library, talks to the Sheep Man, and somehow ends up in jail for not reading enough.
What a great evil fairy tale! You should read more before the Sheep Man catches you. Simple great bedtime story for your kids to do their schoolwork.
The experience was amazing, it was better than I thought. I found the cover concept of the book really good. Overall, the feel of the cardboard in the hand, gliding through glossy sheets of paper is thoroughly enjoyable. The story and illustrations are also impressive. It is like being immersed in the boy’s journey. Impression.
I love history and illustrations. Another Murakami story and an opportunity for beginners to have first contact with the writer
