For hundreds of years, the warriors of the Kusanagi Peninsula have thwarted the Empire’s enemies, giving their frozen land the name “Kaigen’s Sword”.

Born into the legendary Matsuda family of Kusanagi, 14-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: Mastering his family’s fighting techniques and defending his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen’s supposed peacetime, Mamoru realizes he may not have much time to become the warrior he was bred for. Worse, the empire he was born to protect may stand on a foundation of lies.

Misaki tells herself that she left behind the passions of her youth when she married the Matsuda family. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hides her sword, along with everything from her days as a warrior in a faraway country. But as her growing son questions the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion at sea, and her cold husband are worrying her, Misaki finds the warrior looking for a way back to the water.

This story is excellent.

The prologue is a bit slow as the world is set up and the characters are introduced, but that presentation is necessary for the complexity of the story and the characters.

This is one of the best explorations of relationships I’ve ever seen – husband/wife, marriage, parent/child, siblings, ex, friends, teacher/student, inner politics , external politics and internal struggles. I can think of one or more insightful examples of each in this book.

A flashback to the youth of one of her characters may sound a bit jarring at first, but makes sense within the author’s broader work. And necessary to explain the character’s motives and abilities. The other stories are the YA superhero crime war, while this is a mature fantasy story in a setting based on traditional Japanese culture. The settings seem contradictory, but will make more sense as the book progresses.

OH! This book is absolutely amazing. Honestly, I haven’t invested in such a fantasy world in a few years (and I’ve read a lot of fantasy), and I haven’t been so moved by any book in a while. quite a long time.

ML Wang powerfully shows how a village, and even a family, can contain an entire world. The characters are so well perceived that when the war begins, it cannot be ignored. Wang did not hesitate to show the devastating impact of war. And the consequences shape characters in surprising and powerful ways.

Sword of Kaigen deserves all the hype it has received and then some. I cannot recommend it enough. It is good!
