The Tiger At Midnight / Tiger at Midnight, Book 1, Audiobook Online By: Swati Teerdhala
A broken bond. A land that is slowly dying. A game of cat and mouse with only bloodshed.
Esha lost everything in a royal coup – and as the legendary rebel known as Viper, she paid a heavy price. Now, she is assigned the most important mission to date: to take down the ruthless General Hotha.
Kunal has been in the army since childhood. His uncle, the general, made sure that Kunal never strayed from the path – even as part of Kunal yearned to merge with the outside world, the world became increasingly unstable.
When Esha and Kunal’s paths meet one fateful night, an impossible chain of events unfolds. Both Viper and the soldier thought they were making shots, but they weren’t the only players moving the pieces.
As the bonds of preserving their land are broken and past sins meet the promise of a new future, both soldier and rebel must decide where their allegiance lies: to The lives they killed to keep or with love made them dream of something more.
I LOVE this book. It was exactly what I was looking to read and the audiobook performance was excellent. I can’t wait for the next book, but fortunately this one didn’t end too quickly. There was a bit of information spilled at first, but the pace picked up quickly and the interactions between Kunal and Eesha were amazing. Overall, this is a fun POV cat – and -mouse game that alternates between an assassin and the soldier ordered to capture her. Add to that a healthy amount of intrigue and banter and the slow realization that the game is bigger than they imagined and messes with, shifting allegiance, and it’s almost perfect.
The story was not what I expected. That’s much more. Action, myth-based land full of history, complex characters, and impossible choices. All here. A twist in a well – chosen prank created mystery. The story presents both sides of evil, betrayal, conquest and power. Very insightful, thoughtful, but always moving and changing. Rich culture is an advantage. I highly recommend for youth and adults alike.
