“The Tomb” is the first book in the Repairman Jack series, which is part of “The Adversary Cycle” by F. Paul Wilson. It also serves as a prequel to “The Secret History of the World.” The novel follows the character Repairman Jack, a self-employed handyman who specializes in fixing problems that traditional means cannot solve.
The story begins with Jack being hired by a woman named Allie to investigate strange occurrences in her apartment building. As Jack delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers a hidden underground world beneath the building known as the Otherness. This supernatural realm is inhabited by powerful entities and dark forces that threaten to break through into our reality.
Jack soon realizes that he has become entangled in a battle between good and evil, with the fate of humanity at stake. He learns about an ancient artifact called the Rakoshi, which possesses immense power and is sought after by various factions within the Otherness. Jack becomes determined to prevent the Rakoshi from falling into the wrong hands and unleashing chaos upon the world.
Throughout his journey, Jack encounters a diverse cast of characters, including Abe Grossman, an elderly Holocaust survivor who possesses knowledge about the Otherness, and Julio Martinez, a young boy with psychic abilities. Together, they form an unlikely alliance to confront the malevolent forces threatening their existence.
As Jack delves deeper into the mysteries of the Otherness, he uncovers a secret history of the world that has been hidden from humanity. He learns about ancient civilizations, lost knowledge, and cosmic battles that have shaped human history. This knowledge gives him insight into his role as a protector against supernatural threats.
“The Tomb” combines elements of horror, thriller, and supernatural fiction to create a gripping narrative filled with suspense and action. It explores themes of good versus evil, the nature of power, and the hidden forces that shape our world.

Not sure how I missed this series, but glad a friend recommended it recently. The story is good, the characters are well developed (which you really might care about), and the pacing is very good, never dull. Won’t give anything away, other than to say that I appreciate this book the most. Also worth noting is Joe Barrett’s excellent narration – he’s possibly my favorite narrator now, very reminiscent of the great, late Frank Muller – and that’s the highest praise that comes to mind. I could be for any storyteller.! Can’t wait to start the next book, although I don’t see Mr. Barrett as the narrator this time, too bad – will be hearing some more of his work in the near future.
After starting with the very realistic “early years” trilogy of Jack the Repairman, this book on monsters and magic took me by surprise. I was skeptical at first, but started the story as it went and couldn’t stop listening to the last hour and a half because the ending will leave you on edge. I guessed most of the plot twists halfway through, but that doesn’t detract from the story. The narrator’s excellent acting, including the Indian accent, is very convincing.
