The Truelove – Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 15 – Audiobook Online
“The Truelove” is the fifteenth book in the iconic Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian, featuring the adventurous exploits of Captain Jack Aubrey and his friend and ship’s surgeon, Stephen Maturin. The story picks up where the previous book left off, with Jack Aubrey having narrowly escaped being hanged as a pirate and now resuming his duties as captain of the HMS Surprise. This time, however, he is on a different mission – to transport a convalescent Maturin to Australia, where he will be reunited with his estranged wife. As the crew sets sail on the arduous journey, they encounter numerous challenges and obstacles, from violent storms to mutinous crew members. Along the way, they make several stops at exotic ports of call, where Aubrey and Maturin’s sharp wit and intellectual curiosity are put to the test.
As always, O’Brian’s writing is rich in detail and historical accuracy, immersing listeners in a vivid and engaging world of naval warfare, exploration, and political intrigue. Patrick Tull’s narration is exceptional, capturing the distinctive voices and personalities of each character and bringing the action-packed scenes to life. Despite being the fifteenth book in the series, “The Truelove” stands on its own and can be enjoyed by both longtime fans and newcomers to the series. It’s a thrilling and satisfying adventure that will leave listeners eager for the next installment.

The Truelove
- Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 15
- Narrated by: Patrick Tull
A British whaler has been captured by an aspiring leader in the Friendly Isles, and Captain Jack Aubrey is dispatched to restore order. But first, Jack must contend with a fugitive who has been hiding in Surprise, an attractive female prisoner who is driving the group into awkward flirting and dangerous jealousy.
The fifteenth installment of Patrick O’Brian’s hugely successful Aubrey/Maturin series.
I hope Jane Austen will enjoy Patrick O’Brian’s excellent work on the dangers of male-female relationships, especially in a patriarchal world. This is a great opportunity for men to look in the mirror and for all of us to consider the stories we tell ourselves, the standards that are right for us and others. In the UK this book is called Clarissa Oakes. And that’s really the main focus, her impact on a ship full of sailors and privates on a long voyage. A great read.
It’s great to see Aubrey and Maturtin’s adventure and friendship continue. O’Brian’s fluency in languages and maritime affairs is superb.
