The author of Reese Witherspoon Book Club selects Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows following her acclaimed US debut with this witty.
Life – affirming family drama – an Indian film This Is Where I Leave You – tells the story of three Punjabi sisters who set out on a pilgrimage to their homeland to put their mother to rest.
The British – born Punjabi sisters Rajni, Jezmeen and Shirnia Shergill were never close and barely got along growing up and are now even more distant as an adult. Rajni, a principal of the school, is a man of order. Jezmeen, a struggling 30 – year – old actress, fears her big chance will never come. Shirina, the peace – loving “good” older sister, marries a rich family and enjoys a picture – perfect life.
On their deathbed, their mother voiced one last wish: that her daughters would make a pilgrimage together to the Golden Temple in Amritsar to perform her final rites. After a trip to India with her mother long ago, Rajni vowed never to return. But she has always been a good daughter and even now cannot refuse her mother’s request. Jezmeen has just been publicly fired from her television job, so the trip to India was a welcome break to help her pick up the shards of her shattered career. Shirina’s parents – in – law are pushing her to make important decisions about her married life. The time apart will help her decide whether to obediently obey or bravely stand up for the first time.
Arriving in India, these sisters will make surprising discoveries about themselves, their mothers and their lives – and learn the true story behind the trip Rajni took with their mother many years ago, long – an important journey that made it possible for her to never return to India.
The Uncertain Adventures of the Shergill Sisters is a woman who tells the story of traveling India. Balli Kaur Jaswal wrote: “I was curious to see how the trip would be different if it were conducted by women, who are differently vulnerable in a male – dominated society.” “I also wanted to explore the tensions between tradition and modernity in immigrant communities, and especially how those tensions play out between women like these two sisters, who are part of this generation first grew up outside of India.”
Powerful, emotional, and great atmosphere, The unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters is a gripping and poignant story that sheds light on family ties, sisterhood and love, heritage unites us despite our differences. Funny and heartbreaking, it’s a reminder of the really important things we have to cherish in our lives.
This is a well – developed story of 3 sisters, each of whom started with secrets and problems that annoyed and frustrated me, but ended up stretching into the depth of each character so I had can really feel the growth in their relationship and themselves. It delves into Indian culture in an authentic and truly amazing way. I also felt like I was traveling with these sisters in India. It really enjoyed listening to this book.
I didn’t like the author’s previous book, so I approached this one with reservations. But I absolutely love it. Three very different sisters from a Sikh family in London, each at a crossroads in life, trying to fulfill their mother’s dying wish by traveling to India together. The sisters’ personalities, challenges, and conflicts are real, but we also sense the tension between cultural traditions and personal desires. Can’t put it down.
