The WEIRDest People in the World – Audiobook Online

“The WEIRDest People in the World” by Joseph Henrich is a thought-provoking book that explores how culture and psychology shape human behavior. Henrich takes readers on a journey to understand why Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic societies (WEIRD) are so different from the rest of the world.

The book delves into various topics such as kin-based cooperation, religion, social norms, morality, and economic systems, examining how these factors contribute to the cultural differences between societies.

Henrich argues that the unique characteristics of WEIRD societies stem from the influence of the Catholic Church, the Protestant Reformation, and the cultural evolution that followed. He suggests that these historical events led to the development of individualistic thinking, secular institutions, and market-based economies, which are uncommon in most societies throughout history.

Through extensive research and intriguing case studies, Henrich presents evidence that challenges common assumptions about human behavior and sheds light on why some cultural practices may seem bizarre or irrational to Westerners.

Overall, “The WEIRDest People in the World” offers a captivating exploration of how culture, psychology, and historical events shape our beliefs and behaviors. It raises important questions about the impact of cultural evolution on human societies and encourages readers to reconsider their understanding of what it means to be human.

  • How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous

Maybe you’re EXCELLENT: raised in a Western, educated, industrialized, wealthy, and democratic society. If so, you are quite special psychologically.

Unlike much of the world today and most of the people who have ever lived, EXTREMELY people are highly individualistic, self-obsessed, prone to control, non-conformist and analytical. They focus on themselves – their attributes, achievements, and aspirations – rather than their relationships and social roles. How did the WEIRD population become so psychologically distinct? What role did these psychological differences play in Europe’s industrial revolution and global expansion over the past few centuries?

In THE WORLDEST PEOPLE, Joseph Henrich draws on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore these questions and more. He sheds light on the origin and evolution of family structure, marriage and religion, as well as the profound impact of these cultural transformations on human psychology. Mapping these changes through ancient history and late antiquity, Henrich reveals that the most fundamental institutions of kinship and marriage changed dramatically under Church pressure. Roman Catholic. It was these changes that gave rise to the EXCELLENT mentality that would co-evolve with impersonal markets, professional specialization, and free competition—laying the groundwork for the modern world.

Provocating and engaging in both breadth and surprising detail, THE WORLD’S Strangest People explores how culture, institutions, and psychology shape each other, and explains what this means for with both our most personal sense of who we are as individuals and the large-scale social, political, and economic forces driving human history.

This book follows and expands on Joe Henrich’s excellent book “The Secret to Success” (2015). It has to be one of the best books on anthropology, economics, and psychology in a long time. it explains who we (Europeans and North Americans) are, and who we have become. It is a well told and very convincing story.

While the pronunciation errors other reviewers have noted are significantly more frequent than in any other audiobook I’ve heard and are sometimes embarrassingly silly, they rarely interfere with become understanding. The only instance where I can recall when it came close was when ‘causal’ was read as ‘normal’ in a context where the latter could also make sense.

It was one of the best books I’ve ever read. Performance is excellent, even for a non-native speaker like me. Both theory and hypothesis are reasonable and reliable.

This is the best book I have read in the past year. Joseph Henrich continues the rest of Jared Diamond in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Guns, Germs, and Steel.” While Diamond explains why Eurasian culture was ahead based on some geographical advantage over other parts of the world, Henrich explains how the UNIQUE culture of Christianity European Union placed Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States on the path to world cultural domination in Europe. twentieth century.

Excellent, clear, well-paced narrator; a pleasure to listen to and a good match for writing.
I wonder about America’s Bible Belt, which is largely settled by Protestants and highly educated but still has cousin marriages, fearful of other races and immigrants , and traditionally not very ambitious.
I think some of the people here who don’t respect storytellers are narrow-minded, backwards, and partisan types
