An ancient carnage holds the key to humanity’s survival.

Only a small fraction of humanity survived the invasion of Xaros. With Earth’s defenses in ruins, nothing can stop the inevitable return of the aliens. Hope comes from a cryptic message from a long-lost alien race, promising the means to rebuild the shattered space fleet. Captain Valdar sends one of the last assault carriers, Breitenfeld, and his bullet-shocked crew on a desperate mission to the dead world. Unfortunately, humans are not the only forces receiving the ancient message…

This book continues the adventures of The Ember War. While it lacks a bit of originality from the first in the series, it’s a good adventure and a good sequel to the series.

As the book’s advertisement states that the attack aircraft carrier Breitenfeld is on a mission to discover the ruins of the planet Anthalas holds. Naturally, the task encountered some complications. Xaros is one of them but not the only one.

There’s some decent action although much of it is marine-style action, mostly planetary. We also get to know some new alien characters, including Qa’Resh, who is pretty much running the show until the Xaros resistance gets far. Some of the other aliens are not very friendly and some of them, quite frankly, exhibit the unintelligent behavior of a human career politician. Obviously these d–ks are part of the problem, not the solution.

The book doesn’t really come to any kind of conclusion. Although Breitenfeld succeeded in their mission and managed to escape back into friendly territory, there’s not much to come from the mission except promises for future discoveries and adventures. Breitenfeld was also sent on another mission, so the book has a rather open ending. Having said that the twist in what they actually found wasn’t bad at all.

It’s a good adventure story even though it’s a pretty quick read. I’m pretty sure I’ll pick up the next book in the series when it comes out.
