Three Parts Dead By: Max Gladstone – Audiobook Online

“Three Parts Dead” is the first book in the Craft Sequence series by Max Gladstone. The story is set in a world where magic is a form of contractual law and gods are real entities that can be killed. The novel follows the character of Tara Abernathy, a novice Craftswoman who is tasked with resurrecting a deceased god in order to save the city of Alt Coulumb from chaos and destruction.

Tara is hired by the firm of Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to investigate the death of Kos Everburning, the fire god of Alt Coulumb. As she delves into the mystery surrounding Kos’s death, Tara uncovers a web of intrigue and betrayal that threatens to unravel the delicate balance of power in the city.

With the help of her mentor Elayne Kevarian, a senior Craftswoman with a mysterious past, and Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of Kos, Tara navigates through political machinations and magical battles to uncover the truth behind Kos’s death and prevent Alt Coulumb from descending into chaos.

As Tara races against time to unravel the conspiracy that led to Kos’s demise, she must confront her own doubts and fears while grappling with powerful forces that seek to manipulate her for their own ends. In a world where gods can be killed and magic is both a source of power and a tool for control, Tara must use all her wit and skill to navigate the treacherous waters of divine politics and save Alt Coulumb from destruction.

A god has died, and Tara, a first-year associate of the international necromancer company Kelethras, Albrecht and Ao, must bring him back to life before his city falls.

Her client is Kos, the recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without him, the metropolis’s steam generators would stop working, the trains would stop running, and the city’s four million citizens would riot.

Tara’s job: revive Kos before chaos occurs. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the god of death who is having an understandable crisis of faith. When Tara and Abelard discover Kos has been murdered, they must sue in Alt Coulumb’s court – and finding the truth will jeopardize their partnership, their lives, and their hope of living. Alt Coulumb’s fragile remains.

Set in an extraordinary world in which justice is a collective power bestowed upon the few, craftsmen fly on lightning bolts and gargoyles can rule over the city, Three Parts Dead introduces listeners to a moral landscape in which the lines between right and wrong are blurred.

About the author: Max Gladstone went to Yale, where he wrote a short story that was a finalist in the Writers of the Future contest. He lives in Boston.

I really like this book. The story is of considerably above average quality, but not perfect. I will read the next books in this series in the coming months despite the imperfections. I could always see the humor and good storytelling in the story, which I enjoyed immensely. My one suggestion for the author is to add more humor in the future, so we have something funny or a joke every two or three pages instead of every ten or twenty.
My main problem is the narrator. She just didn’t click with me. I liked the voice she used 9/10, but didn’t like the voice she used for Tara. She makes one of the main characters sound like she has a lisp, or something. It’s very small, but it annoys me.
