Review 1: A Conjuring of Light – A Darker Shade of Magic Book 3 by MVG

Struggled to finish

There’s a lot to like. But enough of the characters have such moral ambiguity as to suck the joy out of listening. It is an apocalyptic tale that reason is stretched too far and the final solution is fraught with contradictions. I couldn’t believe the magic. I wish I never started this series.

Review 2: A Conjuring of Light – A Darker Shade of Magic Book 3 by Stina S.

Excellent ending for an excellent trilogy

This whole trilogy has been fantastic to listen to, and the ending was very satisfying. The characters are not stereotypes, you don’t know what exactly is going to happen, and the pacing is just right. It’s refreshing admist a sea of melodramatic YA fantasy novels that have a tendency to follow a certain “formula for success”, this feels very original. I am eager to see what else V. E. Schwab can give us in the future.

I agree with other reviewers that the two narrators should have had some agreeance over pronunciations and voice tones, and Kate Reading seemed like she had taken some vocal lessons from William Shatner during some scenes. Their mild downfalls were not enough to really take away from the entire performance, so don’t let that detract you from giving this series a try.

Review 3: A Conjuring of Light – A Darker Shade of Magic Book 3 by Robert

Disappointing and probably not the end

Big bad defeated by two MacGuffins and a Deus ex Machina. Sequel probably in works. Background and otherwise bland characters are suddenly built up just to make their deaths meaningful. The author ties up enough loose ends to satisfy many readers while posing enough questions to justify continuing things. The main saving grace are Kramer and Reading who are wonderful, as ever.
