Shuggie Bain – Audiobook Online

This is the unforgettable story of young Hugh “Shuggie” Bain, a sweet and lonely boy who spent his childhood in the 1980s in a rundown public housing estate in Glasgow, Scotland. Thatcher’s policies have put husbands and sons out of work, and the city’s notorious drug epidemic is lurking.

Shuggie’s mother, Agnes, walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden to him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with a front door while flipping through the pages of the Freemans catalog, ordering a bit of happiness in the form of credits, anything to brighten up her gray life. Married to a promiscuous taxi driver husband, Agnes kept her pride by her good looks. But inside, Agnes finds growing solace in the drink, and she drains much of the lion’s weekly gain with powerful cans of beer hidden in her handbag and poured into tea cups.

Agnes’ older children find their own ways to keep a safe distance from their mother, leaving Shuggie in her care as she oscillates between drunkenness and sobriety. Meanwhile, Shuggie is struggling to somehow become the normal boy he aspires to be, but everyone realizes that he is “not right”, a boy with a secret that Everyone but him can see it. Agnes has always been supportive of her son, but her addiction has the power to overshadow everyone close to her – even her beloved Shuggie.

The fine writing of this debut novel tenderly envelops the cheerful protagonist, surrounded by so much sadness and terrible despair. Very few books I have read have moved me so strongly and challenged me deeply about what kind of father and husband I should be. One that will live with you long after you finish it.
