Urras is a wealthy planet with a capitalist society, while Anarres is a barren moon settled by anarchists seeking to establish a utopian society. The protagonist, Shevek, is an Anarresti physicist who travels to Urras to share his theories with colleagues on the larger, more technologically advanced planet.
As Shevek navigates the political and social differences between the two worlds, he begins to question the status quo on both Anarres and Urras. He struggles to reconcile his beliefs with the reality of the societies around him, ultimately leading him to make a monumental decision that could change the course of history for both of these worlds.
The Dispossessed explores themes of political ideology, anarchism, revolution, and the struggles of individuals to find their place in a complex and changing society. It is considered one of the defining works of feminist science fiction and has won numerous awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards.

The Dispossessed
- A Novel
- Narrated by: Don Leslie
Shevek, a brilliant physicist, decides to take action. He will seek answers, question the unquestionable, and attempt to tear down the walls of hatred that have isolated his planet of anarchists from the rest of the civilized universe. To do this dangerous task will mean giving up his family and possibly his life. Shevek must make the unprecedented journey to the utopian mother planet, Anarres, to challenge the complex structures of life and living, and ignite the fires of change.
Great production of a great scientific fiction classic. The narrator went back and forth between characters with ease. He also highlighted the gravity of the writing, which is spectacular in a clear and simple manner.
