The English Patient – Audiobook Online

“The English Patient” is a novel by Michael Ondaatje set during World War II. The main character, the “English patient,” is a terribly burned man who has lost his memory of his identity. He is cared for by a nurse named Hana, who has also suffered great loss. As the story progresses, we learn about the lives and histories of the other main characters, including David Caravaggio, a thief-turned-spy; Kip, an Indian sapper in the British Army; and the English patient himself, whose true identity is slowly revealed. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, war, identity, and the power of storytelling to heal and connect people.

The story follows the lives of four characters: the English Patient, a badly burned man who is being looked after by a young nurse named Hana; Kip, a Sikh sapper who is responsible for defusing bombs in the area; and Caravaggio, a former spy who is trying to uncover the truth about the English Patient’s identity. The book is split into multiple timelines and follows the interwoven lives of the characters as they share their experiences of love, war, and identity. The English Patient tells his story through a series of flashbacks, revealing a tale of love and betrayal in the deserts of North Africa before the war. As the novel progresses, the relationships between the characters become more complex. Hana and the English Patient form a deep bond, as do Kip and Hana. Meanwhile, Caravaggio’s investigation into the English Patient’s past leads to shocking revelations. Overall, “The English Patient” is a masterful exploration of love, war, and the human condition. The book won the Booker Prize in 1992 and was later adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 1996.

With ravishing beauty and astonishing intelligence, Michael Ondaatje’s Booker-winning novel traces four lives damaged in an Italian villa at the end of World War II. Hana, the exhausted nurse; disabled thief, Caravaggio; vigilant commando, Kip: Each is haunted by the riddle of the British patient, the nameless, burned man lying in an upstairs room, and memories of passion, betrayal, and betrayal His rescue illuminates this book as rays of light shine on this book.

This book is truly excellent. For imagination and complexity and surprising characters. As for how the story unfolds, the interweaving of thoughts and light and darkness that make up the burned nurse, thief, bomb-breaker and desert explorer – each is broken and replaced. The war is unraveling throwing them together in a deserted Italy. The story untangles the delicate web of lines that hold them together. A story of exceptional beauty, do not hold back.

A literary masterpiece, and well-researched historical novel. You would think Ondaatje was once a commando. The author’s poetic talent is on full display and the prose is beautiful and haunting when the mystery of the “English patient” is revealed. All the characters have lost something very dear to them, their lives torn apart by a great war and their own weaknesses. It’s a tragic yet poignant tale of unbearable love. Excellent narration and rhythm by Jennifer Ehle.
