The Secret Wife By Gill Paul – Audiobook Online
The Secret Wife is a historical fiction novel written by Gill Paul. The story is set in two different time periods, alternating between the early 20th century and the present day. It explores themes of love, loss, family secrets, and the enduring power of hope.
The novel begins in 2016 when Kitty Fisher, a journalist from London, travels to Lake Akanabee in upstate New York to cover a story about an abandoned Russian royal family’s summer house. While researching the history of the house, Kitty stumbles upon a hidden compartment containing a photograph of a young woman and an old diary.
The narrative then shifts to 1914, on the eve of World War I. We are introduced to Dmitri Malama, a young Russian soldier who falls in love with Grand Duchess Tatiana Romanov, the second daughter of Tsar Nicholas II. Their forbidden love affair unfolds against the backdrop of war and revolution.
As the story progresses, we learn about the challenges faced by Dmitri and Tatiana as they navigate their relationship amidst the chaos of war. Their love is tested by societal expectations, political unrest, and the impending fall of the Russian monarchy.
In the present day, Kitty becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering the identity of the woman in the photograph and delves deeper into her research. She discovers that the woman is Nina Ivanovna Arganova, a ballerina who was involved with Dmitri during World War I.
Through Nina’s diary entries, we gain insight into her passionate romance with Dmitri and her struggles as a dancer during a time of great upheaval in Russia. The diary also reveals secrets about Nina’s family and her connection to the Romanovs.
As Kitty unravels Nina’s story, she becomes emotionally invested in her quest for truth. Alongside her research, Kitty also navigates her own personal relationships and confronts her own past traumas.
The Secret Wife is a captivating tale that seamlessly weaves together historical events and fictional characters. Gill Paul skillfully brings the past to life, painting a vivid picture of the Russian Revolution and its impact on the lives of ordinary people.
The novel explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope in the face of adversity. It highlights the resilience of individuals caught up in historical events beyond their control and the lasting effects of secrets and lies.
Overall, The Secret Wife is a compelling and emotionally charged story that will transport readers to a tumultuous period in history while also exploring universal themes of love and identity.

The Secret Wife
- Narrated by: Laura Kirman, Thomas Judd
The story of two very different women, linked by the secrets and lies of history, blend together as past and present weave a wonderful tale of love, loss and loss. and resilience.
2016. Kitty, on the run from a devastating revelation in her own life, finds herself in her great-grandfather’s bungalow on Lake Akanabee. There, she discovers a beautiful necklace, which leads her to uncover a long-buried family secret.
1914. Tatiana, Grand Princess of Russia, falls in love with Dmitri, a Russian soldier, while she is taking care of him. The world is an uncertain place, especially for the Romanov family, and as their romance unfolds, the world they know will quickly crumble around them.
I named this review LOVE because the only thing I am certain of after reading this book is that it is filled with love. Sometimes loving someone is the best feeling in the world and sometimes loving someone you can’t or no longer has is the most heartbreaking and painful loneliness a person can experience in life. This.
The Secret Wife is filled with both of those feelings of love. I gave it 5 stars because, even though it hurts me, giving it less stars would be a dishonest review. It is filled with a heartbreaking yearning love that so many novels written today miss.
Gill Paul certainly caught my attention from the very first chapter when reading about two young lovers who have to hide their feelings from pretty much everyone around them. They were unable to celebrate or discover this love due to the terrible times of war that separated them. I won’t continue the story because I don’t want to spoil it but it is one of raw emotions from start to finish.
Gill Paul made me wonder if we can truly love another person after we find our life’s all-consuming love. And not just wondering if we can but is it fair? In a life so unfair, I’m afraid we have no choice but to embrace happiness when it comes and try to make the best use of it.
I would recommend this book to everyone! It will stay with me for a very long time.
I give this book 5 stars because it is one of the best written novels I have read in a long time. There is nothing bad to say about the book as the characters, plot and sound performance fit all the elements.
The transition between past and present brings with it, an element of surprise that will keep the reader asking for more. Though bittersweet, I was forced to seek out the real Tatiana and discover more about her life because it was so fascinating.
