These are stories that defy conventional logic. The proverb has disappeared without a trace, which happens a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than most people think. These are the missing people who have the most difficult circumstances for loved ones left behind. The cases are embarrassing for park directors, rangers, and law enforcement agencies responsible for Search & Rescue. Things that hinder volunteers from crossing mountains, forests, and barren lands. The stories will make you stop every time you venture out.

Through the disappearance of Jacob Gray in Olympic National Park and his father Randy Gray, who gave his life in search of him, we learn about what happens when a someone is missing. Braided around the core will be stories of characters that fill the void created by a human who has disappeared. We’ll meet eccentric hound handler Duff and R.C., his top purebred, who began tracking down the family dog after his brother disappeared in the San Gabriel Mountains. And there’s Michael Neiger, North America’s leading Remote Area Search & Rescue expert and self-proclaimed “duster” obsessed with missing people. And the leading researcher of missing people on the Ex-San Jose public wilderness, California detective David Paulides, who is also one of the world’s leading Bigfoot researchers.

It’s hard to write about missing people because the story is about someone’s absence. Away. The person in the story is more fragile than a ring of smoke, invisible like someone else’s memory. The bones you dig up are often metaphorical. Although much of the book will deal with memory and false-historical memories- The Cold Vanish is at its core a story of the now and tomorrow. Someone will vanish into a wild tomorrow. These are the people who will be looking.

Overall, I think this is a great book with an excellent narrator, but I’m disappointed that the author chose not to include cases from the East Coast. The Appalachian Trail has a long history and fascinating stories of lost hikers, and Billman would do well to acknowledge them.
