The eighteenth installment of Precinct 87, AX is an outspoken one focusing on Carella and Cotton as they try to figure out why anyone would want to get an ax for an elderly janitor. Lots of hostile interviews, dead ends, and lots of frustrating Carella, moms. McBain’s attention to the struggles and pitfalls of formal cop work is one of his strengths, and Ax is a perfect example of this.

An interesting side of this story is how investigating murders can uncover all sorts of past secrets, whether or not they have anything to do with the crime in the end, and this can complicate an already difficult investigation.

Danny the Gimp plays a role in this investigation. And Carella seems to have finally left the emotional roller coaster he’s been on for the last few novels.
