When I started writing Oath Breakers, I expected a format similar to The Oath and what we’ll see in The Oath, the final book in this trilogy — a collection of connected short stories. loose. I was pretty excited when I found out that The Oath Breaker is actually a complete novel!

The best part of Oathbreakers is the character relationships. I love the deeper partnership between Keth and Tarma. In Oathbound, it’s clear the duo is still learning how to work together. They now have an incredible, trusting, powerful relationship that proves they are both deadly and loving. Keth and Tarma both have their own voices and unique positions. Throw in Warrl and this is my favorite trio in the entire Valdemar universe.

The relationships that Keth and Tarma have and continue to develop with other characters are also well done. The best example is that of Jadrek. When they first met him, he was distrustful and cold. But, in the end, he’s more or less a family member. Jadrek’s evolution feels natural. I certainly wanted him to be part of the family by the end of the novel. But he’s not alone. Justin, Ikan, and even Roald have their own evolving relationships with our main characters. As a lover of character-driven novels, I was deeply moved.

Fun storyline. Filled with plots and schemes, I enjoyed following Keth, Tarma, and Warrl as they adventured to find Idra. Unfortunately, rape is again a plot point. But… this time something was different. Lackey more or less called rape a common way to break a woman. Which makes me wonder — has she started noticing her own tendencies? Will she get away with this in the future?
