Oryx and Crake is the first novel in the The MaddAddam Trilogy series by author Margaret Atwood.
Margaret Atwood’s classic novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, is about the future. Now, in Oryx and Crake, the future has changed: it’s much worse. The narrator of this gripping novel calls himself Snowman. He was sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bed sheet, mourning the passing of his beloved Oryx and best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. As he tries to piece together what happened, the story shifts to decades earlier. Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories?

Since MaddAddam, the book that ends in a trilogy that begins with Oryx and Crake, has just come out, it seems like the perfect time to re-read the other two in the trilogy. I’m really excited to see what Margaret Atwood does with MaddAddam because Oryx and Crake and its sequel, The Year of the Flood, have a very different focus. Or, that’s how I remember them; I’m about to reopen The Year of the Flood, so we’ll see if that opinion still stands when I finish it.

Back to Oryx and Crake. The plot is relatively simple: we follow a man named Jimmy from childhood to adulthood, whose childhood friend and eventual owner, Crake, is a mad scientist. And we follow Jimmy as he tries to navigate a post-apocalyptic world caused by Crake. The book opens several years after this mad scientist has finished his work. Jimmy is neither alone nor alone – Crake has created a group of enhanced humans, genetically engineered in a lab to fit perfectly into their surroundings, where Crake has gone to great lengths to remove the ‘unwanted’ elements of the human structure.
