This book begins a trilogy about Darian, a Valdemarian orphan whose parents disappeared in the mysterious woods bordering his small, isolated village. The townspeople, seeing his family as outsiders, were outraged that he needed care. And Darian knew it, feeling even more lost and alone. Then the barbarians flooded the village, and he only managed to escape… into the clan of the mysterious hawk brothers. They sheltered him, adopted him as their kin, and helped him save his village.

The world building that Mercedes Lackey is unrivaled in. She is phenomenal at creating worlds that are completely fantastical yet completely believable. From the setting to the creatures, she builds the worlds I want to live in.
