Road Out Of Winter – Audiobook Online By: Alison Stine

The winner of the Philip K. Dick Award in 2021.

Rumpus Book Club Selection 2020.

“Combining country thriller and speculative realism into what could be called a dark movie backward…. Incredibly moving.” (Library Magazine, star rating)

In the endless winter, she carries the seeds of hope.

Wylodine comes from a world of paranoia and poverty – her family grows marijuana illegally, and life is always a battle. Now she is left behind to take care of the crops alone. Then spring didn’t return for the second year in a row, bringing with it the harshest winter ever.

With a grow light stashed in her truck and a bag of precious seeds, she sets out on a journey, determined to start over from Appalachian Ohio. But the icy roads and the strangers hiding in the hills are dangerous. After a painful encounter with a violent cult, Wil and her small group of exiles become the target of the sect’s fickle leader. Because she has the most valuable skill in climate chaos: She can make things grow.

Urgent and poignant, Road Out of Winter is a glimpse into an entirely possible near future, with a chosen family that has been forged before a dark demise. Both compelling and lyrical, Stine’s vision is of a changing world where an unexpected hero searches for where hope can take root.

“Imaginationly rich, deeply moving, and unimaginable gives hope in a world that is uncanny like ours…. Excellent article.” (Mrs. Magazine)

And don’t miss Alison Stine’s next literary speculative novel, Trashlands, due out October 2021.

If you like Station Eleven, you’ll definitely love this. It’s a well-written apocalyptic story about an endless winter and the struggles of people as they migrate to stay warm and have a chance to grow crops and so on. The story itself doesn’t have many surprises, but it’s well told.

Like so much. some plots are obvious but well put together. Listening as I trudge through a very cold spell is especially atmospheric. The author has used similes with character nuances; a farmer described something using a farm animal for comparison. I love this plunge into their viewport. The book ends well, doesn’t stretch too much and doesn’t mind cutting down on characters and doesn’t always look for a happy ending.
